CIGAR FACTORY DE OLIFANT

Industrial photography of an age-old process

On the Voorstraat in Kampen, since 1883, stands the De Olifant Cigar Factory . De Olifant is the only remaining factory in Kampen that still produces cigars. In the heyday of Dutch cigar production, more than 100 cigar factories were active. And Kampen was the cigar city of the Netherlands, just as Eindhoven was the city of light of the Netherlands. Due to current tobacco legislation and the decline in smokers in the Netherlands, the cigar factories have disappeared.  At a factory like De Olifant in Kampen, they produce Sumatra, Corona, Matelief, and knakje cigars, among others, with semi-automatic machines. They still make cigars a few days a month. I was allowed to be there.
